A10VNO Series 52 vs 53: Read the Code Before You Order

The A10VNO is a variable displacement axial piston pump — swashplate design, open circuit — rated 210 bar nominal and 250 bar maximum, used in mobile applications such as tractors and fan drives. It is the mobile member of the A10VO family, and it is ordered the same way as the rest of the family: by a code in which the size, the control, the series index and the direction of rotation are all written out. This guide covers the three things buyers get wrong most often: what really separates Series 52 from Series 53, which controls exist on which series, and the rotation position that makes a pump impossible to fit if it is wrong.

The short version

  • Sizes 28 and 85 exist in Series 53 only. Sizes 45 and 63 exist in both series — and the series you choose decides which controls you can have.
  • 210 bar nominal, 250 bar maximum — size your circuit on the nominal figure.
  • Controls DR, DRG, DRF (DFR), DRS (DFR1), DRSC, ED71 and ED72 exist on both series.
  • EP and EK electro-proportional controls exist on Series 53 only — this is the single most common ordering mistake.
  • L or R in the code is the direction of rotation. It cannot be changed on site, so copy it from the nameplate.
  • The code ends with positions for flange, ports, through-drive and seals — order by the complete string, not by the first half.

What the A10VNO platform is

A10VNO pumps are swashplate-type variable pumps for open circuits, built for mobile machinery: the flow follows the machine’s demand rather than sitting at a fixed value, and the load-sensing versions keep pump output matched to what the actuators actually use. Nominal pressure is 210 bar with a 250 bar maximum, which places it in the medium-pressure band of our axial piston range — above the fixed-displacement vane pumps, below the high-pressure industrial pumps. Series 52 or Series 53? It decides your sizes — and your controls

Two things follow from that table. First, sizes 28 and 85 are Series 53 pumps only — there is no Series 52 version of them. Second, sizes 45 and 63 are built in both series, so the series number is not simply “what size is it”: for those two sizes the series you order also decides which controls are open to you, because the electro-proportional EP and EK families are offered in Series 53 only. If your machine is a size 45 or 63 and needs proportional control, the Series 53 build is the one to specify.

Reading an A10VNO model code

The code runs from the platform to the suffix:

A real example: A10VNO45ED72/52L-VRC11N00P — size 45, electrohydraulic pressure control 24 V, Series 52, left-hand rotation, followed by the flange/port/through-drive suffix. The control and rotation positions are the ones buyers most often leave out of an enquiry, and they are exactly the positions that decide whether the pump fits and works.

The trap: the electro-proportional EP and EK families are available on Series 53 (sizes 28 and 85) only. If your machine needs proportional control and its old pump is a size 45 or 63, you are not looking at the same control family — confirm the requirement before ordering, because the pump will physically fit but will not behave the way the machine expects.

The naming: the same load-sensing function appears under two spellings. DRF and DRF (DFR) describe the X–T open version, while DRS and DFR1 describe the X–T plugged version with flushing. When you order a replacement, copy the spelling from your own nameplate rather than from memory — the drain arrangement must match the machine’s circuit.

Left or right: the rotation position

The letter after the series index is the direction of rotation, viewed on the drive shaft: R is clockwise, L is counter-clockwise. A pump built for one direction is not reversible on site — the position is fixed by the internal design. Before ordering, check the old pump’s nameplate, or turn the machine’s shaft and watch which way the drive turns. A pump with the wrong rotation letter is the most expensive kind of correct-looking part, because it bolts on and then does not pump.

210 bar nominal, 250 bar maximum

Two numbers appear on every A10VNO data sheet and they are not interchangeable. Nominal pressure 210 bar is the maximum design pressure of the pump — treat it as the value your circuit is sized on. Maximum pressure 250 bar is permitted only within a single operating period (2.5 ms), and the sum of those periods must stay within the pump’s total operating period. If your machine holds a high pressure continuously, the honest answer is a higher-pressure platform rather than running an A10VNO at its maximum figure.

Five checks before you order

  1. Size — 28, 45, 63 or 85; 28 and 85 mean Series 53, while 45 and 63 can be either series.
  2. Control — and whether it is one of the EP/EK proportional versions, which exist on Series 53 only.
  3. Control spelling — DRF or DRS, DFR or DFR1: copy exactly what the nameplate says.
  4. Rotation — the L or R position, read from the old pump rather than assumed.
  5. The whole suffix — flange, ports, through-drive and seals are all in the code; a partial code is a partial answer.
